Boxes Built for Exactly One Person Each
Every so often a customer walks in with a project so thoughtful it makes us want to up our own gift-giving game. This was one of those.
She came to us with a mission: five friends, five Christmas gifts, and absolutely zero interest in "good enough." Each box needed to be the friend it was going to — not just hold their memories, but somehow look like them too.
So she did what any reasonable, only-slightly-obsessed gift-giver would do: she went through dozens of wood blocks and samples, one at a time, hunting for the grain that matched each person's vibe. Then she paired designs to the wood. Then she looped us in to sanity-check the pairings, argue a little about proportions, and land on final calls together. Then — because four species and five designs apparently wasn't enough decision-making — she picked the flocking color, the hardware, and the little adornments for each box individually.
We ended up building with Black Walnut (twice — once clearly wasn't enough), Mulberry, Black Locust, and Ash. Four woods, five personalities, no two boxes trying to be the same thing. The walnut broods a little, the mulberry's got warmth for days, the locust is tougher than it looks, and the ash just shows up and does the job beautifully. Sound like anyone you know?
The whole thing turned into less of a woodworking order and more of a character study — five keepsake boxes, each lined in crushed rayon flocking and custom-built to hold somebody's treasures while quietly saying "I see you." That's a tall order for a rectangle with a hinge, and we think they nailed it.
We're grateful for a customer who cares this much about the people in her life, and even more grateful she let us be part of turning all that thought into something they'll actually hold onto. Her friends have no idea what's coming.
