The Ugliest Cutting Board (But we can't stop looking at it)

Every project we do starts with a vision. This one didn't.

We grabbed species, tried to force a pattern out of the color and grain, and it just wasn't working. So we did something we don't usually do: we leaned all the way into the wrong. Mixed species on purpose so there was no pattern to find. Moved strips out of sequence in the next glue-up just to make it worse. Every step became about chasing that same restless, off-kilter feeling — anxiety, built into wood, on purpose, like some kind of deranged science experiment.

Then, almost out of self-preservation, we threw in the diagonal strips. Not to fix the chaos — just to put one hand on it before it fully got away from us. A little structure holding back a lot of noise. Like we were trying to funnel the chaos and filter it into one direction. Even the species pattern in those diagonals is doing something subliminal in there, whether you clock it or not.

We didn't set out to make art. We set out to survive a board that had it out for us. Somewhere in the fight, it turned into something that makes you feel a thing you can't quite name — which, turns out, is basically the definition of art, intentional or not.

It's ugly. We know it's ugly. We're not going to pretend otherwise. Admit it if you are the one — someone out there loves this duckling and knows it will be a swan in their kitchen. It might be the most honest board we've ever made, and there's only one — there can be only one.

Four species, one grudge match

Black Walnut, White Ash, Black Cherry, and Padauk — end grain, hand-glued, hand-finished, mildly emotionally scarring to produce.
